Lead-acid battery benefits - Wednesday, 22.01.2025

Accumulators in lead-acid technology have been around a long time. For more than 165 years, in fact. Yet, modern lead-acid batteries are anything but old hat. We’ve continuously developed the technology and improved our manufacturing processes. Now, we offer a new generation of products. Our aim is to meet demanding customer requirements.

Lead-acid battery benefits

Certainly, we’ve seen major advances in lithium-ion batteries. There are also exciting developments in and up and coming technologies, such as sodium-ion. However, lead-acid batteries are as popular as ever. Performance, load capacity and reliability. These qualities have long been their hallmark. The latest generation of products offers all this and more. Through innovation we’re combining long-held advantages with new benefits. Think robust, resilient, and recyclable.

Robust

In general use, lead-acid batteries deliver a high load capacity. As energy storage devices they deliver years of reliability. Indeed, they remain operational under exceptional conditions – following an earthquake, for example. That's why energy network operators and power plants worldwide rely on the technology to secure their own power supply. Reserve current is key, here. If an incident occurs, power plants are able to shut down in a controlled manner. They can then be put into a safe state. Fundamentally, lead-acid batteries are robust. It’s the main reason for choosing this technology over others.

Resilient

Storage systems that deploy lead-acid batteries offer a high degree of intrinsic safety. So-called thermal runaway, involving a fire of the entire storage system, is unknown for this technology. Consequently, lead-acid products don’t require additional electronics for complex battery management. Problems with exceptional loads are uncommon. Short, temporary operating conditions outside the specification are rarely an issue. Typically, neither leads to serious damage or battery failure. International transport regulations governing hazardous goods also offer insight. Batteries can be transported as air freight without major restrictions.

UPS applications

In view of this resilience, lead-acid batteries feature heavily in UPS applications. Data centres are a prime example. Batteries bridge the gap between loss of grid power and diesel generator start up. It’s a vital role. Generators can take some time to deliver the requisite power.

Recyclable

Importantly, lead batteries can be recycled. The process is both simple and economically viable. The high-quality recycled lead produced makes an ideal raw material. As a responsible business we’re committed to sustainability. We also take environmental impact seriously. That’s why we invite customers to return used HOPPECKE lead batteries for recycling. In the UK, certified companies recover the lead for reuse. Often, it goes into new batteries.

Clean Lead

So, lead-acid battery benefits are numerous. The technology represents a well-rounded solution over a battery’s entire life cycle. From raw material to production and many years of use, lead-acid batteries prove ROBUST and RESILIENT. Capable of repeated reuse, they are completely RECYCLABLE.
